せっかくの休みに好きな仲間と旅行やショッピング、ドライブに行っても、

帰りに渋滞にハマってしまうと疲れがドッと増して車内の空気も

どんより重くなりますよね。


今回はそんな「渋滞」を表すスラング ”bumper-to-bumper ”をご紹介します


bumper とは車の前後にあるバンパーです。

車のバンパーとバンパーがくっついてしまいそうなほどの大渋滞、という意味です。

車のバンパーを想像すればすぐに「渋滞」のイメージが湧くので覚えやすいスラングだと思います。

車のタイヤが「パンク」したと言うとき、思い浮かぶ英単語は punk ではないでしょうか。 

音楽ジャンルとしての「パンク」はこちらの punk です。

本来は「くだらない奴」「役立たず」の意味になります。


「タイヤがパンクした」という場合のパンクは、実は puncture を省略した表現です。

punctureは「パンクさせる」「(針などで)穴をあける」「傷つける」といった意味があります。


例 He had his car tire punctured.

彼の車のタイヤがパンクした。(いたずらされて)穴をあけられた。



ただし、英語では puncture を略して punk とは基本的に言いません。


車が破裂を伴いパンクしたとき、アメリカ人は「blowout」と表現します。


句動詞の “blow out” で、「吹き消す、ふっ飛ばす、爆破する」。このイメージで

車用語で “blowout” で「パンクすること」という意味になります。 


タイヤの空気が抜けてぺたんこになった状態は flat と表現できます。


ちなみに頭が「パンク」しそうだと言うときは、

My head is going to explode.
