13. 疑問・不明を述べる
疑問に思っていることを述べるには、I wonder…「…だろうか？jという表現が使えます。wonderは「…だろうかとあれこれ自問する」という意味の動詞です。また、はっきりしないことに言及するときには、I don ‘t know, but…「わからないが・・」や、I’m not sure, but…「はっきりは言えないが・・」といった言い方を覚えておきましょう。
◎I don’ t know, but…「わからないが…」
I don’t know, but I think it’s probably coffee.
わかりませんが、それはおそらくコーヒーだと思います。
◎I’m not sure, but…「はっきりしないが・・」
I’m not sure, but it looks like there are four people in the boat.
はっきりと言えませんが、ボートには4人乗っているようです。
◎It’s hard to be sure , but…「確信はもてないが…」
It’s hard to be sure, but they look like vegetables.
はっきりしませんが、野菜のように見えます。
◎It’s difficult to say for sure, but…「はっきりと言うのは難しいが・・」
It’s difficult to say for sure, but this looks like a grocery store.
はっきり言うのは難しいですが、これは食料雑貨店に見えます。
◎It’s had to say…「…を言うのは難しい」
It’s hard to say where these climbers are.
この登山者たちがどこにいるのかはっきりとは言えません。
◎I can’t figure out…「・・・はわからない」
I can’t figure out which line this is, since the picture is black and white.
写真がモノクロなので、これがどの路線だかはわかりません。
◎I wonder…「…かなあ？」
I wonder why she bought all those things.
なぜ彼女はあんなにたくさんのものを買ったのだろう？
I wonder what the presents are.
プレゼントはなんだろう？
I wonder which monkey got in first!?
どのサルが最初に入ったのだろう？
