ネイティブのリアル英語 go Dutch   割り勘

マリアとケイが食事に出かけたときのことです。

楽しく過ごして、さてお勘定、というとき。

こんな場合は、割り勘がいちばんだと思っているマリアは、ケイがなにか言い出す前に、自分からこう切り出しました。

Let’s go Dutch.

学生時代に覚えた英語はしっかりと頭に残っているマリア。

「割り勘にする」はgo Dutchだったわ、と即座に思い出し、それを使ってみたのです。

Dutch は、「オランダ人」「オランダの」という意味ですが、オランダではデートの時でも支払いは別にするという習慣があることが由来と言われています。

近年オランダの都市においては女性の収入が男性を超えている事情もあり、男女が食事をしたときは、女性が勘定を持つこともあるようです。

Let’s go Dutch の他に、一般に使われているフレーズはsplit the billなどです。このsplitは「（縦に）割る」という意味、the billは「勘定書」の意味です。これは、考えてみると日本語の「割り勘」（←割前勘定）にピッタリくる表現ですよね。

「勘定を払う、費用を持つ」ときは、“foot the bill” “It’s on me” 　を使います。

友人とレストランで食事をして自分が勘定を持つ時は、

“ I’ll foot the bill. “  と言ってみましょう。

●　Dutch courage　：　「酔っぱらいの勇気」
例文：He needed a bit of Dutch courage to talk to her, so he had a drink.

ネイティブのリアル英語　doggie bag〔料理の残りを〕持ち帰る袋

今回は”doggie bag“という表現を見てみたいと思います。

“doggie bag”は何のことを指しているか分かりますか？

辞書で調べてみると、

a bag for food that a customer did not eat at a restaurant; the transparent pretense is that the food is taken home to feed the customer’s dog.

つまり、レストランで残った食べ物を家に持ち帰るための袋のことです。

なんで“doggie bag”という表現なのでしょうか？

“doggie”ということばから分かるように、犬にあげるための袋や容器というのが由来です。レストランの客が「犬に食べさせる」という建前で店から食べ残した料理を持ち帰り、たいていは人間が食べるために用いられています。

昔は、人の食べ残しを犬の餌にしていたことも名前の由来です。

でも最近では人が食べるので、“people bag”と言う場合があるそうです。本音をみんなが認めるようになったのか、犬が怒っているからかは分かりません。

ネイティブのリアル英語　　cut down on       減らす、縮約する

cut down on [something] は、～を控える（摂り過ぎに注意する）、減らす、

という意味で使います。　食べ物や飲み物を勧められて断る際などにも便利な

フレーズです。　無駄 – wastefulness, 家計や経済におけるのはwasteful

spendingを削減するときにも使います。

●　cut down と cut down on　の違い

He cuts down his drinking.　　飲酒という、行為を減らす。

He cuts down on his drinking.　酒の量（あるいは酒に使う金）を減らす。

　　デザートはいかが？

B．No, thank you. I’m trying to cut down on sugar.

cut を使ったイデオム

●　Cut to the chase　: 　要点に入る、本題に入る
Instead of wasting time with small talk, let’s cut to the chase and discuss the main issue at hand.

●　Cut corners　: 　いいかげんにやる、手を抜く
He finished the project quickly by cutting corners, but the quality suffered as a result.

●　Cut it out　: 　やめろ、止めろ
The children were making too much noise, and their mother told them to cut it out.

●　Cut and dried　:　 簡単な、予測可能な
The outcome of the game was cut and dried, with the stronger team winning by a large margin.

疲れた～って英語で何ていうか知っていますか？よく知られているのは”tired”だと思いますが、

すごく疲れた時にアメリカ人はよく　”wiped out” を使います。

他にも「疲れた」を表す英語ではたくさん存在します。

肉体的に疲れているとか、精神的に疲れているとか、病気で衰弱しているなど、

状況に合わせて「疲れた」を使い分けできれば、あなたはネイティブレベルです。

●　「疲れ果てる」　様々な表現

beat 　/　bushed　/　tired out　/　exhausted　/

worn out　/　burnt out　/　weary

●　「wipe out」　には様々な意味があります

　１．拭き取る、ぬぐい取る

　２．（利益などを）帳消しにする。（恥を）そそぐ。

　３．（敵などを）一掃する（←日本語も「掃く」を使うところが似てますね）

　　　　やっつける、全滅させる。殺す。

　４．（人を）疲れさせる、へとへとにさせる。　☆今回はこれですね☆

　５．（麻薬や酒で）酔わせる、ハイにする。

　６．（人を）破産させる、つぶす。

wipe を使ったイデオム

●　Wipe the slate clean: 過去の過ちや誤解を忘れて、新しく始めること。

ネイティブのリアル英語　　red-eye    　（飛行機の）夜行便

アメリカ人は（飛行機の）夜行便のことを　「red-eye」又は「red-eye flight」と呼びます。

例えば夜遅くに出発して、早朝に着くようなフライトのことをいいます。

なぜレッドアイ（red-eye）かというと、深夜フライトのせいで十分に休息できず、

寝不足のために目が充血して赤くなることを意味しています。

アメリカは広いですから西海岸と東海岸では時差が３時間あります。

（東の方が進んでいます。）そして西から東まで飛ぶには５時間くらい

かかるので、合計８時間ほどかかることになり、例えば夜１０時に西海岸を

出ると東海岸に６時到着などとなります。

飛行機で寝られないと到着した日が辛いですが、”red-eye”のフライトは

値段も比較的安いことが多いですし、ホテル代が必要ない、

夜中に移動できて時間が有効活用できる、など利点もあります。
