「  稼ぎ頭 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”     cash cow ” といいます。

例文

The movie studio saw the actress as a cash cow.

映画会社は、その女優を稼ぎ頭とみなした

cashは「現金」，cowは「乳牛」なので，cash cowは「お金になる乳牛」が

元々の意味ですが，比ゆ的に「稼ぎ頭」「ドル箱」の意味で使います。

この表現は、一度手に入れた乳牛は、継続的にミルクを絞ることができることに

由来しているようです。

「  色々な役割をする 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”     wear several hats ” といいます。

例文

Because the store is so small, he has to wear several hats, from

accountant to stockboy.

何しろ小さい店なので、彼は会計係から倉庫係まで多くの仕事を

一手にこなさなければならない。

一つ以上の役割や責任を果たす様子を指して使うイディオムです。

一説には、1900年代初め頃、帽子は職業や役職ごとに使い分けられていたため、

この表現が使われるようになったといわれています。

”hat”は帽子以外に「役割」や「職業」の意味があります。

wear several hatsは

be responsible for several different dutiesの意味で、

「複数の異なる職務に対して責任を持つ」ということです。

have several responsibilitiesとも言えるでしょう。

また、severalの部分はdifferentに置き換えても同様の

意味を示すことができます。

アメリカでは　　”    short-handed  ” といいます。

　彼らは、現在かなり手が不足している

「人手が足りない」を英語でshort-handedと言います。

 語源は「手がほとんどない」から来ており、

18世紀末に誕生した表現です。 

名詞はshort-handednessです。 

アイスホッケーの世界では「数の面で劣勢な状況」を表します。

また、shorthandには「速記」という意味もありますので覚えておきましょう。

        rat race　過当競争

「  過当競争 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”     rat race  ” といいます。

例文

People in the corporate world get stressed out over the fear of losing

their place in the rat race, as it were.

企業社会にいる人たちは、言ってみれば、出世競争で自分の居場所を

失うことへの恐怖で、ストレスをためています。

「rat race」は、

よくハムスターがクルクル回している「回し車」を

走り続けることです。

出世競争という意味です。

きりがないばかげた競争という意味でも使われます。

あまり良い意味では使われません。

ネズミはとてもすばしこく競争心旺盛な動物です。

そんな動物が何かを目指して我先にと競争しているイメージですね。

これはfrom 9 to 5 （午前九時から午後5時までの勤務時間）ということで

パートタイムに比べフルタイムの仕事になります。

「定型的な仕事」。日常的にこなすルーティンのことを指すから、

「単調でつまらない仕事」ってニュアンスを含む場合もあります。
