　 up to something  企んでいる

「      企んでいる 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”  up to something   ” といいます。

例文

It looks like you are up to something with prosecutor Emily

エミリー検事と何か画策しているようだが

up to にはいくつもの用法があります。

よく耳にするIt’s up to youは、その一つで、あなた次第という意味ですが、

ここでの“up to”は「誰かの責任になる」といった意味があります。

責任(up)があなたに向く(to you)→従って「あなたにお任せ！/あなた次第」となります。

例文

It’s up to you if you believe it or not.

信じるか信じないかはあなた次第です。

up to something となると、ひそかに企んでいる、という意味になります。

これは、up to にはもともと・・・で忙しい、熱中している、という意味があり、

“something”何か良くないことに熱中しているということから、

悪いことをたくらんでいる、という意味で使われるようになりました。

　 toss up  五分五分

「      五分五分 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”  toss up   ” といいます。

例文

It’s a toss up whether she comes again or not.

彼女が再び来るかどうかは五分五分だ

tossとは下から上に物を軽く放り上げるという意味で、バレーボールのトスをイメージすれば、

わかりやすいかと思います。

toss upとなると、コインを投げて，裏が出るか表が出るかで勝負などを決めることです。

英語ネイティブでは五分五分の見込みである、どちらとも言えない、

という意味で使います。

よくwhether（?するかどうか）との組み合わせや、between A and B（AかBどちらか）

を伴う形で使われます。

「      潔癖症 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”  neat freak   ” といいます。

例文

My roommate is a neat freak.

私のルームメイトは潔癖症です。

「neat freak」は、”極度のきれい好き”、”潔癖症”　という意味です。

　あなたの周りにもそんな人は居ませんか？

「neat」は、几帳面にピシッと整っている事を表す単語です。

「 Freak」は、変わり者、やり過ぎな人を意味します。

「～症」の表現でポピュラーなものは、

I have agoraphobia.（広場恐怖症）

I have claustrophobia.（閉所恐怖症）

I’m scared of heights.（高所恐怖症）

　 lose it    カッとなる

「     カッとなる 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”  lose it  ” といいます。

例文

The shopkeeper was so rude that I nearly lost it.

店員の態度が失礼だったので、もう少しでキレそうになった。

“lose it” 直訳すると「それを失う」という意味ですが、「それ」は何を意味するのでしょうか。

この場合の it は control で、「自分の感情のコントロールを失う」ということを意味しています。

今まで普通だった人が、いきなりキレる場合に使います。

もともとのフレーズは、「I lost my temper：カッとなってしまった」です。

「my temper」を、もっとシンプルな「 it」と置き換えたフレーズです。

　 lay down the law   頭ごなしに言う

「    頭ごなしに言う 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”  lay down the law ” といいます。

例文

My mother laid down the law and told me I had to be home by midnight.

母は頭ごなしに命令して、夜の12時までには帰宅しなさいと言った。

 

頭ごなしに何かその人が正しいと思っていることを無理やりやらせる場合に

lay down the law と表現します。

文字通りだと法に規定するといった意味になりますが、口語としては

無理やりやらせる意味で使われます。 

“ lay down”  は「貯蔵する、規定する、定める」という意味です。

以下に ” lay down “ を使った表現をまとめてみました。

●　lay down a new law  : 新しい法律を作る

●　lay down the law for fashion:  服装のルールを決める

●　step in to lay down the law : (けんかの）間に入ってしかりつける

●　lay down to: ～に真剣に取り組む

●　no lay down: 横積禁止
