「 (人を）断る」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　” turn someone down ” といいます。

例文

I confessed my love to him, but he turned me down.

彼に告白しましたが、彼に振られてしまいました。

「turn … down」は「…を断る」という意味の熟語です。

「turn」の後には名詞や代名詞が入ります。リクエストやオファーを断る時に

使われるフレーズです。

「turn … down」は、音楽などのボリュームや、ライトの光、エアコンの温度などを

弱めるという意味もあります。

「 結婚する」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”tie the knot ” といいます。

Tie the knotという英語は、日本語では「結婚する」という意味です

Tie(タイ)が、「結ぶ」という動詞で、knot(ノット)は、「結び目」という名詞です。

二つ合わせて、結び目を作るという意味で、

転じて『結婚する』という意味を持つフレーズで使われるようになりました。

日本語の「縁結び」という言葉に似たような英語のイディオムです

語源は昔のヨーロッパの風習で結婚する夫婦がセレモニーで、約束の証として、

二人の手をひもで結ぶ、というものだと言われています。

stand someone up 　すっぽかす

「 すっぽかす」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”stand someone up ” といいます。

例文

She stood me up on the first date.

最初のデートで彼女にすっぽかされた

「stand up」は「立ち上がる」という意味です。それが過去形「stood up」となると、

「ずっと立たせ続ける・立たされ続ける」ことから「(デートなどの約束を)すっ

ぽかす・すっぽかされる」という意味になります。

「She stood me up.(彼女はぼくとの約束をすっぽかした)」や、とくに受身で

「I got stood up by him.(彼にすっぽかされた)」などと使います。

もちろん単純に「stand up」の過去形として「立ち上がった」の意味の

こともありますから、文脈で判断しましょう。
