その2つが備わっていないとハイスコアは目指せません。 


TOEFLというテストを最も難易度の高い英語力判定テストとしていえる

要因の大きな一つが、このライティングセクションにあるIntegrated Taskです。


Integrated Taskはその名の通り複合問題であり、そこには非常に高度な速読力、

英語のレクチャーの1回で聴き取るリスニング力を必要とします。


230~300語程度のパッセージを制限時間内(3分)に読み終えることが

前提条件となり、理解度を落とさずに、でいるだけ早く読むことが

求められますが、そのために必要なのが、スラッシュ・リーディングです。


英文を頭から理解できるよう、意味のかたまりごとに

スラッシュ(/)で区切って読んでいく方法です。

初めは細かく区切っても構いません。 慣れてくると

より大きなかたまりで捉えられるようになります。

決して英文を返り読みせず、大意をつかむことに慣れておきましょう。


スラッシュ挿入の例

読解力をつける4つの秘訣!

それでは、読解力をパワーアップするための方法をガイダンスしていきましょう。


1. 読書に集中できる環境作り


まず、第一に、「読む」ことに集中してください。

TVやスマホ、iPadなどを周りに置かないでください。

そして、あなたがリラックスできて

パッセージを読むのに適した明るさの下で読むようにしましょう。

記事や本に書かれている情報を吸収しやすい脳にするためには、

脳をリラックス状態にさせ、さらに十分な酸素を送ることも大切です。


2. 読む目的を明確にする


2番目に、読む目的についてよく考えてください。

記事/本/雑誌/コラムなどの表紙を見れば、読み物の主題や

何について書かれているかはわかります。

そこで、あなたが、そこから何を学びたいのか、知りたいのかを明確にしましょう。

例えば、記事のタイトルが ”The Remedies of Migraine-片頭痛療法 ” だとします。

そこで、あなたは、 ”The Remedies of Migraine-片頭痛療法 ”

とは何かを考えなければいけません。

結局のところ、リーディング試験は、「文章の意図」や

「筆者が言おうとしていること」を中心に出題されますから、

何を読むにしても、目的意識をしっかり持って、

必要な情報を正確に読み取ることが肝心です。


3. 唇を動かさない― 「脳」と「目」のフル回転


3番目に、唇を動かしながら本を読むことはやめましょう。

唇を動かしながら読んでいると言うことは、

口で言えるほどの速さで読んでいることになります。

実際、声に出ていなくても、口を動かすと脳は

自然に口の動きに合わせて本を読んでしまします。

読む速度が遅くなると、読み進めて行く中で、前に書かれていたことを忘れてしまい、

文章の全体像を掴めなくなってしまいます。

「速読」は脳と目をフル回転させて行うものです。


4. まとまり単位で読む


最後に、読むときは、まとまりごとに読んでください。

単語一つひとつ読む必要も、文法に気を取られる必要もありません。

多少、単語の意味が分からなくても、段落で何が書かれているかが

大まかにわかる程度でも構いません。

1文章、1段落単位の文字のかたまりを広い視野に入れ、

集中力・イメージをフル回転させ、素早く読み取るようにしていくのです。

速読は、IELTSリーディングセクションの必須学習課題です。

何よりも、先に述べた「4つの秘訣」を参考に、多読を進めてください。

質の高い読書量が読解力を高めていくことは言うまでもありません。

As for me, I prefer watching films to attending concerts. First of all, watching films is a very relaxing activity. For example, no matter how many times I watch movies like Spiderman and Pirates of the Caribbean, I get lost in the stories and forget about the outside world. Secondly, I think of films as artwork, so I try to appreciate them as works of art when watching them. For example, the acting, camerawork, lighting, and many other aspects of a film are all important. When they come together successfully, like in Citizen Kane, for example, I realize I’m watching something more than a movie. This makes me appreciate watching the film even more.

Tourism is big business all over the world. The package trip with a tour group is the most popular way to travel for the elderly, with almost 85% of tour group travelers being 50 years and older. Many hotels give discounts of up to 20% for large groups. On the other hand, for young travelers, backpacking remains popular, especially in Europe. Some travel alone while others go with friends, but young travelers almost never join tour groups. In a recent survey, the main reasons for not joining tour groups were the cost and desire to have a flexible schedule. I’d like to point out something about art from the past. In previous eras, making art was expensive. Most artists required patrons merely to afford the paint, canvas, and everything else they needed, and these patrons, naturally, kept most of the artwork in their homes for their own personal viewing. This made art inaccessible to most people. The artists, quite understandably, didn’t appreciate this, so they came up with two ways to enable the public to admire their work.For one, many artists began using cheaper materials. This let them work without a sponsor. This way, they could produce the art they wanted to and also retain possession of their art. They were then free to display it wherever they wanted to. This, naturally, permitted many more people to see their work. Of course, one drawback to this approach was that the lower quality of the paint and other materials meant their work often faded quickly. Fortunately, many of these works can now be restored using modern methods.Another thing artists did was to display their art both outdoors and in public places. Remember that artists didn’t just do paintings. They did statues, sculptures, and many other kinds of art. Take a look at any cathedral. There is art everywhere. Look at the statues and the stained glass window in them. They’re all works of art. And consider one of the greatest examples of art anywhere-Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel. How many thousands or millions of people have seen his artwork? He attained what most artists strive for: for the greatest number of people to admire his work.

The professor states that dinosaurs once ruled Earth but suddenly became extinct. She gives two different theories to explain their disappearance. The first is that a meteor or asteroid struck Earth. She even says that some scientists know where it hit. The strike sent dirt up into the”atmosphere, which hid the planet from the sun. It got colder, and there was no sunlight, so all the plants died. Without food sources, the dinosaurs all died. The second theory is that there was an eruption of a super volcano. This filled the air with carbon dioxide, which caused the greenhouse effect to start on Earth. When subjected to heat, lizard and dinosaur eggs change. Females in eggs become males. So there were no more females being born, which meant that the dinosaurs couldn’t reproduce.

Have you heard about the positive externality effect? The positive externality effect is kind of a difficult theory to explain. Basically, it means that certain actions in society can help society as well as the individual. Let’s see. A common example is the flu shot. People can help themselves by getting a flu shot and keeping healthy. They might save some money by not missing work, avoiding the doctor and not having to pay for medicine. They also help society as a whole by not getting others sick. This is the positive externality effect. Of course, sometimes people don’t care about society and don’t get their shots. This hurts all of society, not just the individual. The government can help by reducing the costs of the shots or forcing people to get their shots.

The positive externality effect is a theory that when one person or a group of people is helped by something, the effect that it has on them will positively affect society as a whole. TOEFL iBT スピーキング 概要と攻略法(Question 4)

Question 4   概要

それではTOEFL iBTスピーキング Question 4の概要を理解していきましょう。


Question 6では、90秒~120秒程度、230~280語程度の

アカデミックなトピックに関する講義を聞きます


そしてリスニングが終わったら20秒で回答の準備を行い、

60秒でスピーキングを行うという流れになります。


また、Question 4での質問内容は必ず、「講義で述べられているトピックに

関して2つの~を説明しなさい」というものです。


自身の意見を述べる場ではなく講義のメインポイントを説明する

というスピーキングテストとなっています。


メモ取りが許されていますのでリスニング中にしっかり概要と要点を押さえておくことが重要です。


採点方法

Task 4も他のQuestionと同じく、4点満点で採点が行われ、

各点数の目安は全4問で4点取れば16点、3点で12点、2点で8点、1点で4点です。


全体アプローチ(Holistic approach)という採点形式となります。


各タスクでスピーキング全体を見て全体的に何点のレベルの

スピーキングなのかを決める採点方法となっているので、

ミスの回数によって評価されるわけではありません


ですから話している途中にミスをしたからといって満点の4点を

とれないというわけではありません。

ETSに認定されている採点者がスピーキングの評点をして、

受験者がどのようにトピックを展開し言いたいことを

どれほどうまく伝えられているかを判定します。


Task 4での評価項目も、他のTOEFLスピーキング同様以下の3つです。


  • Delivery (流れ、発音、ペース、イントネーション等)
  • Language use (文法と単語)
  • Topic development(内容-:しっかり質問に答えられているのか)

まずはリスニング

リスニングでは教授があるトピックについて定義し、それに対して2種類の例を挙げます。この内容は毎回同じ形式なので、慣れることが大切です。

We all know about the Importance of conservation and keeping our environment clean. But how do we convince others to do the same thing? Well, there are many ways. But I want to tell you about two of the most effective ways. The first is by utilizing moral persuasion, and the second is by encouraging people to get involved by volunteering.By utilizing moral persuasion, we can appeal to people’s sense of morality. Does everyone ­remember Smokey the Bear?, His motto was; “Only you can prevent forest fires. ” You probably remember the TV cartoon character, but  did you know Smokey was a real bear? Some firemen saved him from a forest fire. The National Forest Service used the image of a cute bear cub to encourage people to protect their environment and not start forest fires. They were using a cute animal to convey a moral message. Now, how about volunteering? Have you ever volunteered to pick up trash on the side of the road? Didn’t you feel great afterwards? Sure you did. You probably realized how much trash there was and how important it was to clean it up.  If more people started volunteering to do this, they would reach the same conclusion. They’d get out, help clean and realize they should be more responsible.

Creative Categorization

Marketing experts do their utmost to induce customers to purchase their products. Often, when faced with a product that, for whatever reason, does not appeal to a large segment of the population,marketers merely change the category it is in. This process is called creative categorization. By doing this, marketers can increase the appeal of a product. The two most common methods of creative categorization are to change the cost or design of a product. By doing so, products may go from being ones purchased by a small number of people to ones with mass appeal.

Imagine you’re a marketing executive and you have some products to sell. There may even be a huge section of society which doesn’t purchase your products. Well, there are a couple of ways to break into that market.You might try changing the price of your product. Did you know, for example, that watches were once regarded as expensive pieces of jewelry? Timepieces used to cost too much for most people. But most of you have watches, right? What happened? Well, one brilliant marketer started touting watches as fashion accessories. Sales of watches leaped dramatically. You can get watches for less than ten dollars nowadays, and they come in all kinds of styles. By changing the category into which watches fell, they began appealing to a greater number of people. Here’s another. Think about cell phones. At first, their use was limited, and only rich people or businessmen used them. However, companies began marketing them to the masses. Now you’ve got kids and grandparents with cell phones these days. Does a six-year-old kid need a phone? Not at all. But marketers have made it so that phones are no longer outrageously expensive. Likewise, they aren’t considered tools only for the rich or for businessmen anymore. They’re fashion devices now, almost like accessories for many people.

However, once companies began marketing them to the masses, now even young children and the elderly have them, often as fashion accessories. As described in the reading, these are both examples of creative categorization.
